Retail with no staff, open around the clock.
FeelEat’s Happy Fridge pairs sustainable, locally sourced meals with connected fridges and a mobile app — browse the menu, scan to unlock, pay in-app, and see exactly what is in every dish.
A business model that only exists if the software works.
FeelEat is a Swiss foodtech operator with a simple promise: homemade, locally sourced meals in glass containers, waiting in a connected fridge at your workplace. No canteen, no queue, no staff — just open the door and take your lunch.
That promise only holds if the fridge can run a shop by itself. It had to know who opened it, what they took, and how to charge them — around the clock, without a single employee on site. FeelEat wanted to sell fresh, sustainable meals without the theft that kills most honour-system retail.
We engineered the entire loop as one system: the connected fridge, the scan-to-unlock flow, in-app payment, live inventory telemetry and the menu experience — including nutrition, allergens and ingredient origins for every dish. Eight years on, the same team still ships every release.
Today the platform runs the company’s daily rhythm: menus go live each morning, every fridge streams stock and temperature around the clock, and restocking follows live demand instead of guesswork. The result is a retail model that actually holds — 40K+ app downloads, a $10M+ valuation, and roughly 90% less theft than honour-system fridges.
No staff means no second chances.
Unattended retail lives or dies on two numbers: how much stock walks out unpaid, and how often the fridge says no to a paying customer.
Honour-system retail leaks money.
Fresh meals in shared spaces traditionally run on trust — and trust doesn’t scale. Without a cashier or a terminal, most operators either accept the shrinkage or give up on fresh food entirely.
- No staff, no checkout — the fridge itself has to identify the buyer, meter the sale and collect payment.
- Shrinkage kills margins — honour-system fridges bleed stock, and fresh-food economics can’t absorb it.
- Vending can’t do fresh — off-the-shelf machines have no answer for daily menus, allergens or dietary profiles.
- 24/7 with perishables — a silent fridge failure overnight spoils an entire location’s stock.
Make the fridge the shopkeeper.
We closed the loop end to end: one platform under the fridge, the app and the back-office, so every door opening is a known customer and every sale settles itself.
- Scan-to-unlock sessions — the door only opens for a known, payable customer, tracked per user.
- Charge on door close — what you take is what you pay; there is no checkout step to skip.
- Live fleet telemetry — stock, temperature and health stream from every fridge into operations.
- Transparency built in — nutrition, allergens and ingredient origins on every dish, updated daily.
The fridge, the app, the loop.
Hardware access control, payments and inventory — engineered together so the unmanned model holds.
Scan-to-unlock access
QR and app-based unlocking with per-user sessions — the fridge knows exactly who is shopping.
In-app payments
Two-tap checkout charged automatically on door close — no terminals, no queues, no honour system.
Live inventory telemetry
Every fridge reports stock in real time, driving restocking routes and demand planning.
Menu & transparency
Daily menus with nutrition, allergens and origins — trust built into the buying flow.
Dietary personalisation
Preferences and restrictions filter the menu per user, across every fridge location.
Fleet operations
Health monitoring, temperature alerts and OTA updates across the whole fridge network.
From first lock to fleet scale.
Four phases, one team — the same engineers have shipped every release for eight years.
Conceptualisation
Fridge lock hardware, the per-user session model, and the payment rules behind charge-on-close.
Design
The scan-to-unlock flow, a menu built around nutrition and allergens, and dashboards for fridge operations.
Development
iOS and Android apps, the platform backend, payment integration and fridge telemetry — one connected loop.
Deployment
Per-site installs, OTA updates across the fleet and 24/7 monitoring — plus eight years of releases since.
What kept us up at night.
The problems that decided whether the business model worked at all.
Charging the right person, every time
A sale settles itself only if the fridge knows exactly who opened the door and what left the shelf. We built per-user sessions reconciled on door close — automatic, dispute-proof charging that collapsed theft by ~90% versus honour-system fridges.
A fleet that can’t go dark
Every fridge holds perishable stock — a silent failure overnight spoils a whole location. Health monitoring, temperature alerts and OTA updates keep the network observable and recoverable without a site visit.
Trust at the shelf edge
FeelEat’s promise is knowing exactly what is in every dish. Nutrition, allergens and ingredient origins flow from the kitchen to the app for menus that change daily — accuracy here is the brand.
